Have you had your music today?

I recently had the opportunity to watch the documentary Alive Inside.  It follows social worker Dan Cohen as he uses music to awaken Alzheimer’s patients across the country.  His determination slowly spawns change in the care given to so many neglected by the healthcare system. I wonder back to the moments spent with my elderly grandparents (both suffered from some form of dementia/Alzheimer’s) in their gloaming years.  I wonder what would have happened if we had introduced music to them.  We were always in their nursing home room usually without any sounds other than the quiet steps of staff, the sound of the “wheel” on Wheel of Fortune or the groans of a nearby resident.  It really is no wonder they retreated inside themselves and lost such a connection with the outside world.  They were in a sense prisoners on death row awaiting the end.  This film has really made me realize how sacred the aged are to our society.  We owe the elderly much more than we are currently providing.  Take a moment and watch the trailer for the film and dedicate time to seeing the film it in its entirety,  you’ll be glad you did.
